Ok - I'm not writing much these days. Too much heavy stuff going on in my life (to say nothing of the world - makes me embarrassed to even mention my stuff, but there you are....it may not be that bad, but it keeps me from writing.)
Something is living in our deck umbrella. I can tell by the little droppings all around the base. We haven't been sitting on the deck at all this summer - too many bees and wasps whizzing around. Weeks ago when the weather forecast was for high winds, I cranked the umbrella into it's closed position. And so it has stayed. Very inviting, evidently for some small animal - or some sentient being. What to do? I don't want to rob a small beast of it's home, but I think it should find a better one before winter comes on. We will have to take the umbrella in.
Another part of the problem is that I'm afraid of opening it. What might run/drop/fly out? Well, more little dropping for one thing - I found that out today when I did sort of pluck at the folds of the cloth. Nothing else moved. Perhaps the inhabitant has already left for better winter quarters. I'm thinking I will sweep around the base of the umbrella after giving it a few really good shakes. Then if more droppings appear later, something is still there. Is that a move forward? Damned if I know.
