I've been watching some of the Olympics. A number of things surprise me, but none so much as -
How fast badminton is - I simply can not see what is happening unless I focus totally on my TV screen. And mostly not even then. Those birds fly well over 150 miles per hour. How the players manage to play more than one stroke I can not fathom. Fencing is almost equally fast - and there I don't even know what the rules are, or what to look for.
How entirely strange synchronized swimming is. I watched the duet events this evening in amazement, struck almost dumb by the weirdness of it all. Pairs of (quite shapely) legs sticking out of the water, toes usually curled to near cramping, waving about, bending and striking the water - bodies and arms flailing about in surreal but extremely disciplined ways. Manic smiles. This is very strange stuff indeed. I feel guilty not deeply appreciating anything that is considered an Olympic sport - but I gotta say it, what kind of sport is this? Where's the AFLACK duck when you need him?
