Well - it's Losar - Tibetan New Year. This year, the Wood Monkey year, is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche.
A year ago I more or less ignored New Year - both western and Tibetan. This year the only notice I gave January 1 was that it was completely quiet on the eve - I could have gone to bed any time I wanted. In Brooklyn there was always a burst of noise around midnight and it was better to wait up for that - if I didn't want to get startled out of sleep. Back then I was pretty big on resolutions and lists too.
But Losar -today - is different. Somehow it has felt so much like a holiday that I have been surprised all day to find stores open, mail being delivered, and normal life going on. Somehow it is something special. Today I received in the mail a text of a meditation practice that I've been doing since this past July - it is a beautiful, extraordinarily well translated version. A good way to start the year.
